Business Continuity – ISO 27031
ISO/IEC 27031 “Information technology — Security techniques — Guidelines for information and communications technology readiness for business continuity” is under development and is at the final draft stage (FDIS).
ISO/IEC 27031 will provide guidance on the key principals and concepts behind the function of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in ensuring business continuity in the 21st Century.
The suggested standard will:-
- Identify and outline relevant aspects including performance criteria, design, and implementation details, for improving ICT readiness as part of the organisation’s ISMS, helping to ensure business continuity.
- Suggest a structure or framework (processes and methods) for any organisation – private, corporate or Government
- Enable an organisation to measure its continuity, security and therefore readiness to survive a crisis in a consistent and recognised manner.
The scope of this standard encompasses all types of event (not just information security related) that could have an impact on ICT systems and infrastructure. It extends the practices of information security incident handling and management, ICT readiness planning and services.
The standard will incorporate the cyclical PDCA approach central t0 ISO 9000, extending the conventional business continuity planning process to take a far greater account of ICT. It will incorporate ‘failure scenario assessment methods’ such as FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis), with a focus on identifying ‘triggering events’ that could precipitate serious incidents and problems.
